Sustainability

We are committed to sustainable practices. Here are just some of the ways we are currently doing our part to protect the environment.

Our Initiatives

No Animal Products

By serving food made from plants, we are reducing the overall consumption of animals. Animal agriculture is a leading cause of climate change in the form of carbon and methane emissions. Not eating animal products is the most effective way environmental pollution and reduces a person’s carbon footprint by 61% to 73%. Source: Poore J., Nemecek T. Reducing food’s environmental impacts through producers and consumers. Science. 2018;360:987–992.

Composting

We exclusively use compostable materials for everything disposable that we provide at our restaurants. This includes all straws, utensils, napkins, take-out containers and tops, coffee cups, plastic cups, lids and sleeves. Of these, the non-paper products are industrially compostable.

We encourage the composting of food waste in our kitchens and dining areas by providing compost receptacles and clear instructions to teach people how to compost.

Our compost is picked up and processed by a local composting company.

Composting reduces methane emissions from landfills and lowers our carbon footprint. While methane doesn’t linter as long in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, it is initially far more devastating to the climate because of how effectively it absorbs heat. In the first two decades after its release, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Eliminating Plastic

We do not use any plastic disposables at Plant City, including all of our restaurants. All Plant City food packaging is compostable and classified as green waste. It will biodegrade into its natural components of water, carbon dioxide and plant matter, whence it came. We do not sell plastic bottled water.

Reducing Waste

We try to divert as much waste as possible from our landfills. We do this by reducing the waste produced in our kitchens, using appropriate portions for our dishes so that as little as possible is wasted, providing recycling and composting on site, and educating our Plant City community on how they can help us in this effort.

Additionally, our restrooms are equipped with forced air hand dryers, reducing our dependency on disposable paper towels.

Buying Locally

We source our ingredients as locally and freshly as possible. This keeps the number of miles our food has to travel to get it from the field to our kitchen as low as possible, which reduces the gasoline that needs to be burned to get it here. Buying fresh ingredients locally also reduces the amount of required overall refrigeration, a leading contributor to carbon emissions.

Alternative Transportation

In a car dependent world, we look for ways to help people reduce their dependence on cars. We are situated in downtown Providence between two sidewalks in a walkable neighborhood across from a brand new pedestrian bridge connecting both banks of the Providence River. We are accessible from major bus routes that pick up within a block of our main entrance, and multiple bike racks are in close proximity.

Conserving Water

We use an in-house water filtration system to provide our guests with fresh, pure water. We do not sell plastic bottled water. All of our restrooms are equipped with water-conserving faucets.

No Palm Oil

We do not carry, sell, source, or use palm oil or products containing palm oil. We recognize that palm oil production contributes to deforestation and by not using palm oil, we are doing our part to protect our planet.

Carbon Saved

We are reducing our carbon impact by buying as locally as possible, not buying animal products, using compostable materials whenever possible, not using plastic disposables, not using or selling palm oil, recycling, and composting.

Renewable Energy

We are 100% powered by renewable energy. This means that we are not dependent on fossil fuels for our building energy needs.
